If you’ve ever thrown a baby shower or attended one, you’ll know they’re often grand affairs — think elaborate themes, a mountain of gifts, and a big guest list. But what if you’re expecting your second (or third!) child and want something a little more relaxed? Enter the baby sprinkle — the understated celebration more Northern Beaches mums are embracing.
What’s a Baby Sprinkle?
A baby sprinkle is a scaled-down version of a baby shower. It’s a chance to celebrate the mum-to-be and the new arrival without the full-blown fuss of a traditional shower. There’s typically less fanfare, fewer guests, and a focus on gathering rather than gifting — which suits many second-time mums perfectly.
Where baby showers often come with extensive registries, sprinkles tend to focus on practical gifts like nappies, wipes, or clothes for a baby of a different gender than the first. Sometimes guests are simply invited to bring a plate and share a cuppa, making it more affordable and less overwhelming for everyone.
Why They’re Trending
Many mums feel they still want to mark the arrival of a second or third child but without going over the top. Sprinkles offer a lovely middle ground — you get to enjoy time with friends, share in the excitement, and still feel special, without the pressure or planning of a full event.
They’re also reflective of how parenting has changed. There’s a growing trend toward celebrating everyday moments, and baby sprinkles align perfectly with that vibe. It’s less about the Instagram-perfect event, and more about the real connections.
Planning a Sprinkle That Suits You
There are no rules with a baby sprinkle. It can be a brunch, a picnic in a local park, or even a backyard BBQ. It might involve close friends and family only — no extended invites or formal RSVPs required…..and while there’s no need for a theme, a little styling never hurts. Since sprinkles are more casual than baby showers, a theme isn’t necessary, but it can make decorating easier. Popular themes include farm animals, jungle animals, and monkeys, but my favorite is to seize on the word ‘Sprinkles.’
Think rainbow sprinkles in cupcakes, pastel confetti, or even sprinkle-inspired invitations — it’s fun, simple, and cost-effective.
Keep It Relaxed and Meaningful
Whether you keep it indoors or host it in a local park, the beauty of a baby sprinkle is in its simplicity. There’s no pressure to wow a crowd — just the joy of bringing loved ones together to welcome a new little one.
A baby sprinkle doesn’t need a big budget or big guest list — just a big heart. It’s a lovely way to celebrate the journey of motherhood, whether it’s your first baby or your fourth.
