Why alc-free wine is a game-changer for locked down mums

Quality time with kids is precious. But too much of it can be grating – hello lockdown. By the end of the day, we need a little something to take off the edge. Alcohol-free wine is just the thing.

Here are five reasons why.

No hangover

Working from home, parenting, and homeschooling is already tough, right? Throw in a hangover and it takes things to the next level.

We can all agree. Hangovers are not fun. The combined brass band playing in your head and the mental beat up makes for a long day. Add in kids and, well, you know the score. If only you could hide under the doona, but you can’t

To avoid the inevitable, try swapping your wine for a thirst-quenching non-alcoholic one instead. Wake up the next morning with a clear body and mind.

Avoid lockdown weight gain

The link between weight gain and alcohol isn’t surprising. Bubbling with calories, even a couple of wines can equate to a fast-food burger. When two drinks turn into a bottle (which, let’s be honest, they often do!), you can add fries to that order

Then there’s the longer-term effect. Alcohol prevents your body from burning fat so the more regularly you drink, the more likely you are to notice your jeans getting snug.

In comparison, non-alcoholic wines contain significantly fewer calories and you’re less likely to binge.  One or two with friends is enough to satisfy those cravings and keep weight gain at bay.

Sleep like a baby

We’ve all done it. Reached for a wine at the end of the day because it helps us float off to sleep. But once we’ve fallen into that slumber, things aren’t that dreamy.

Alcohol affects the quality of our zzz’s. It stops us from falling into deep restorative sleep (REM), and, instead, we spend more time floating in and out of wakefulness.

We wake up tired, cranky and sleep-deprived. Not a great combo for another day in lockdown.

Stay cool, calm and collected

It’s common to associate alcohol with relaxation. A quick drink to calm stress and have fun after a long day. But in an ironic twist, the day after drinking may feel longer.

Alcohol messes with the neurotransmitters in our brains leaving us at risk of sadness, anger, and stress. It also increases anxiety – the term hangxiety exists for a reason – which makes relaxing even tougher.

Drinking a non-alcoholic wine to chill out at the end of the day instead helps you maintain the ritual of drinking and associated chill out time.

Lose the mum guilt

Every day’s groundhog day right now. The hours blend into one, as do the days and we’re all ready to return to normality. But zoning out with alcohol can lead to mum guilt  – as if we need more of that.

Post drinking can exacerbate guilt for not being present, for lacking energy, for being grumpy and impatient and for generally wanting your kids to leave you alone.

Remove the alcohol and you’ll lessen the guilt. Sipping on a non-alcoholic wine will leave you feeling guilt-free – in more ways than one.
