Life as a mum is busy—endless to-do lists, meal preps, school drop-offs, work, and somehow finding time to breathe. But there’s one small, powerful habit that can make a world of difference for your child’s future and create moments of connection in your day: reading aloud.
If you’re thinking, I don’t have time for that, don’t worry—I get it. The good news? Reading aloud doesn’t have to be a perfectly planned bedtime routine (unless that works for you!). It can be as simple as a few pages while you’re waiting in the car at school pickup, reading a recipe aloud while cooking, or flipping through a book together as you unwind after work. Find what works for you and your family.
Make It Fun & Easy
Reading aloud isn’t about performance—it’s about sharing stories, laughter, and learning together. Here’s how to keep it light and fun:
- Find books YOU enjoy – Your enthusiasm is contagious! Whether it’s a childhood favorite or a new discovery, if you love it, they will too.
- Get books everywhere – Visit your local library, check out an op shop, or swap books with friends. Ask for books as gifts for birthdays—imagine a bookshelf filled with stories your child loves!
- Make it a game – Use silly voices, let kids guess what happens next, or act out scenes. Reading should feel like play, not a chore.
No Judgement, Just Love
Some mums feel self-conscious reading aloud—maybe you stumble over words or worry you’re not doing it “right.” Here’s a secret: your baby doesn’t care if you mispronounce a word or if your voice cracks. They’re soaking up your voice, your love, and the rhythm of language. Even if you’re just pointing at pictures and naming objects, you’re building their brainpower.
Older Kids? Get Them Involved!
If you have older kids, let them take the lead! Siblings reading to younger ones creates magical moments of bonding and helps both children grow as readers. It’s a win-win.
Reading aloud isn’t another thing to add to your list—it’s a simple way to connect, calm, and inspire. One story at a time, you’re building a love of reading that will last a lifetime.
So, grab a book, get cozy, and dive in—your child will love every second, and you might just find yourself loving it too.
Let’s raise readers, one story at a time!
