The best ways to stay fit and cool this summer

Summer this year has already reared its head, with an El Nino event being declared already and soaring temperatures predicted to come.

Luckily nearly 85% of Australia’s population lives within 50 Kms of the ocean to cool down. However, for those of us who don’t, don’t worry, Australia doesn’t mind a pool or two. With more than 1 in 7 homes now having a swimming pool, plus all of the amazing rivers and waterways, there is no shortage of ways to cool down, whilst getting in your dose of exercise too.

Here are a couple of our favourite ways to do just that, regardless of where you live.

Turn your pool into a training ground

Have you heard of Fluid Running? Fluid running is a new approach to one of the oldest and most effective ways of staying fit, running. But without all the impact and stress that running has on your body. Deep water running has also been shown to work out certain muscles in the body that don’t often get stimulated as it is an exercise type that we very rarely do. This is great for the body as when it is exposed to new forms of exercise it strengthens itself even more. Plus you get to stay nice and cool for the whole duration of your workout. A win-win, especially when coming into summer, plus it is an app based workout that is easy to follow

Get your paddle on!

If you don’t have a pool, don’t worry, I’m sure there’s a river nearby that you can take advantage of to cool down in and use to stay fit. Natural rivers can be a little unpredictable, so why not try something where you are working out on top of the water. Something like stand-up paddle boarding. Red Paddle Co are the masters of SUP and have created a variety of inflatable SUP boards that are perfect to just throw in the back of the car, along with the beach towels, swimmers, and everything else you need to cool off.

SUP is also one of the best core workouts you’ll experience as it focuses on improving your balance. Targeting all those muscles you forgot you had and as soon as you start to overheat you can cool off immediately by just allowing yourself to slide off the board and enjoy the water for a few moments. Another win-win.

So now there’s no excuse when you’re feeling too hot and bothered to work out this summer. You can either head to the pool or seek out the closest river to exercise, all the while staying nice and cool as well.
