The Australian premiere of the Tony Award-nominated Broadway comedy, Clyde’s; a fiery, sandwich-slinging social commentary by two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, Lynn Nottage is now showing at Ensemble Theatre, until 10th June 2023.
Giving audiences food for thought, Clyde explores the economic and social ensnarement of the formerly incarcerated kitchen staff of Clyde’s truck stop diner.
We spoke to Gabriel Alvarado, who plays Rafael in this darkly hilarious comedy.
What do you find most challenging about bringing your character Rafael to life on stage?
The most challenging thing I’m finding through this process is understanding the psychology of Rafael. In the play, Rafael is marginalised… erased from the public record. He is an ex-felon who has served time in prison while trying to overcome a battle with drug addiction but is also on a journey to resurrect his spirit. Honouring the formerly incarcerated is crucial and relating to someone’s experience like this has been the most difficult as it’s so far beyond my own life.
What has been the most rewarding aspect of being a part of this production?
Everything! Working alongside the cast and crew who have put all their hard work, passion, and love into this production has been an honour. I’ve learnt a lot about craft working with my fellow actors and directors on this show and being able to be a part of Lynn Nottage’s world has been so fulfilling, not only as an actor but as a human being. We are only at the beginning of our season with Clyde’s and what’s been most rewarding is the reaction this play is receiving.
How do you like to spend your time when you’re not rehearsing or performing?
I try my hardest to focus on resting throughout the production, especially with its play, which is so emotionally and physically demanding, but amazing. I love socialising with my family and friends which helps my soul. They keep me grounded and humble always.
What is your favourite sandwich?
One of my favourite sandwiches is ‘a Cuban sandwich. Roast pork is layered with ham, swiss cheese, pickles and yellow mustard.
