REVIEW: The Ensemble Theatre’s Captivating Take on Chekhov’s Masterpiece

by Nina

The Ensemble Theatre’s latest production of Uncle Vanya artfully adapts and presents Anton Chekhov’s cleverly uncluttered yet potent view of pre-revolution country life in Russia, showcasing family struggles and personal turmoil.

The intimate and evocative space of the theatre itself enhances the effectiveness of this almost voyeuristic glimpse into the Voynitsky living room where we witness the idle grumblings of the gentle class against the impoverished hard-working family who support them.

Joanna Murray-Smith’s adaptation strikes the delicate balance between comedy and drama as Chekhov intended, addressing the very relevant miseries of mental health and financial strain which plague the family.

Whilst all of the characters are strong, I related to the humility and strength of Telgin, played beautifully by John Gaden AO, creating palpable contrast to the insufferable, self-obsessed Professor Serebryakov. The gentle love-struck yet perpetually forlorn Sonya is charmingly portrayed by Abbey Morgan. Vanessa Downing’s contribution further enriches the production, showcasing her considerable skill and adding a layer of sophistication to the ensemble.

While The Ensemble Theatre consistently presents high-quality productions, it also retains a warm, local charm that guarantees an enjoyable and memorable evening out.
