I love a show that can make you laugh one minute and completely tug at your heartstrings the next, and The Dapto Chaser did exactly that.
At first glance, you might think it’s a story about greyhound racing, but it’s really about people. It’s about family, loyalty, chasing dreams, making mistakes, and trying to do the best you can with the hand you’ve been dealt. The characters are so genuine that before long you feel like you’ve known them for years.
What stood out most to me was the acting. I can honestly say it was some of the best acting I’ve ever seen. It never felt like I was watching actors on a stage—it felt like I was watching a real family living through the highs and lows of everyday life. Every performance was believable, and the connection between the cast was incredible.
The writing is sharp, funny and full of heart. There are plenty of moments where the audience bursts into laughter, but there are also quiet moments that hit you right in the feels. It’s one of those shows that keeps you completely engaged from beginning to end.
The Ensemble Theatre is the perfect venue for a production like this. It’s an intimate space, so you feel close to every conversation, every joke and every emotional moment. It draws you into the story in a way that’s hard to describe until you’ve experienced it yourself.
I walked out feeling like I’d spent two hours with a real family, sharing in their joys, frustrations and hopes. That’s a credit not only to the writing, but to a cast who brought every character to life so naturally.
Whether you’re a regular theatre-goer or someone who only goes every now and then, I’d highly recommend seeing The Dapto Chaser. It’s funny, moving, beautifully written and brilliantly performed. It’s one of those shows that stays with you long after the curtain comes down, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking for a genuinely great night.
