REVIEW: Sunset Boulevard

by Lucy | September 2024

I went to see the brand-new Sunset Boulevard at the Sydney Opera House, and let me tell you, it’s a hit! Andrew Lloyd Webber’s score is just as brilliant as ever, and the whole show is fantastic.

Sarah Brightman stars as Norma Desmond, a former silent film star who’s now living in isolation, dreaming of a comeback. When struggling screenwriter Joe Gillis, played by Tim Draxl, finds his way into her life, things get intense. Norma hires Joe to help her with a script, and while Joe tries to juggle his own career and a budding romance with Betty Schaefer (played by Ashleigh Rubenach), Norma’s obsession starts to take a dark turn.

The set and costumes are stunning, capturing the essence of 1940s and 1950s Broadway. The choreography is energetic, and the direction really brings out the depth of the characters. Brightman’s performance as Norma is particularly powerful. She transitions beautifully between joy and despair, making Norma’s tragic story even more poignant.

The supporting cast is excellent, too. Tim Draxl delivers a heartfelt performance as Joe, and Ashleigh Rubenach adds warmth as Betty. The musical numbers, especially the love duet, are highlights of the show.

Overall, this production of Sunset Boulevard is a remarkable experience, blending classic elements with fresh, compelling performances. If you’re looking for a night of top-notch theater, this is it. You won’t want to miss it!
