Review: Saving Shark Pup by Sharon Dalgleish

by Joanne Wilson

My 7‑year‑old has been going through a huge ocean‑animals phase lately, so when we picked up Saving Shark Pup, I was secretly hoping it would be one of those books that actually lives up to their excitement. It really did. The story manages to feel adventurous and meaningful at the same time, and it gave us such a lovely mix of learning and imagination.

The book introduces sharks in a way that feels exciting rather than frightening, helping children see them as important creatures rather than something to fear. The language is accessible, the chapters are just the right length for bedtime reading, and the underwater world is described in a way that kept my 7‑year‑old completely absorbed.

What I appreciated most is how naturally the story encourages empathy and environmental awareness. It opened up so many great conversations with my child about ocean life, protecting animals, and how even small actions can make a difference.
