An imagined Roman Epic set in futuristic New York, where society’s obsession with immediate gratification deeply troubles the visionary genius Caesar Catilan, who dreams up an alternative, peaceful urban utopia, Megalopolis.
Notable resistance comes from the weary Cicero, the current Mayor, who is content to leave the city in its dire mess. His romantic entanglement with Cicero’s daughter, Julia, makes Caesar’s mission more challenging.
Further opponents arise and everyone must watch their backs as these greedy conspirators plot and murder on a scale reminiscent of a Shakespearean drama. Dramatic twists and turns lead to a striking conclusion.
Adam Driver, Nathalie Emmanuel, Giancarlo Esposito, Shia LaBeouf, Aubrey Plaza, Kathryn Hunter, Jason Schwartzman, and Laurence Fishburne are impressive in their roles, though the seasoned skill and experience of Jon Voigt and Dustin Hoffman bring a crucial sense of sophistication to the ensemble.
The stunning cinematography and special effects make this film a visionary treat, masterfully brought to life by Francis Ford Coppola, who impressively funded the entire production, US $120 million (AUD $180 million). Coppola touchingly dedicates Megalopolis to Eleanor, his wife who sadly died during production.
Megalopolis will be available in Cinemas on 26 September 2024
