After its Broadway debut in 1971, Jesus Christ Superstar made its Australian debut at the Capitol Theatre. Now, over five decades later, the show is back at the Capitol, more popular than ever.
Directed by Timothy Sheader, this new production brings a lot of energy and creativity to the stage, with a talented cast and crew putting their all into telling the story of Jesus’ final days. The production is full of movement, stunning visuals, and powerful vocals, reimagining one of Christianity’s most iconic stories.
The costumes and set design by Tom Scutt are standout features. The followers of Jesus appear in modern, casual outfits that could fit in at a fashion show or a music festival. Even Jesus sports a snapback cap. The simple yet striking costumes complement the energetic choreography by Drew McOnie, which blends contemporary dance, gospel, and high-energy aerobics.
The set features a large, rusted scaffold creating a tense atmosphere, with musicians above adding to the mood with electric guitar and keyboard. A central cross symbolizes sacrifice and betrayal, while Lee Curran’s lighting enhances the rock opera vibe.
Michael Paynter brings strength and vulnerability to Jesus, and Javon King delivers a powerful performance as Judas. Their intense vocals sometimes overshadow the emotional depth of their roles. Mahalia Barnes shines as Mary, while Peter Murphy plays a strong, gruff Pilate. High priests Elliot Baker and John O’Hara bring a menacing presence with their steampunk-inspired looks.
Reuben Kaye delivers a memorable performance in a brief but bold role, with a standout costume.
Fans of musical theater will love this visually stunning, music-driven show, which won a 2017 Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival. Whether you believe in the story or not, the experience is sure to leave you in awe.
