Cats is back in Sydney for its 40th anniversary tour, and it’s bringing a joyful, musical spectacle that families and young audiences will absolutely adore.
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s beloved feline fantasy has leapt back onto the stage at the Theatre Royal, dazzling with energetic performances, fun songs, and truly stunning costumes that bring T.S. Eliot’s whimsical characters to life. We found the show visually and musically engaging throughout its 2-and-a-half-hour runtime. From the moment the curtain rises, the stage transforms into a magical junkyard playground where the Jellicle Cats sing, dance, and strut their stuff.

For families, Cats is pure entertainment. The music is lively and memorable – especially the iconic “Memory,” which has been stuck in my head ever since I saw it. Young audience members will be captivated by the larger-than-life set design and the incredible attention to detail in the cat-like makeup and costumes.
There are fantastic performances throughout, including Todd McKenney as the plump Bustopher Jones and Alex Alvarez lighting up the stage as the magical Mr. Mistoffelees. Most of the ensemble cast get their own opportunity to shine, and the wide array of talent on display kept us constantly on our toes, being new to the characters of the musical.

This musical is more a series of character spotlights than a linear narrative, which wasn’t what I expected, but that’s ultimately part of its charm. The fun lies in meeting the quirky, mischievous, and endearing cats who compete for a chance at a new life. With no dialogue, it’s nonstop song and dance, which is something I love in a musical.
This production honours the legacy of Cats, which remains one of the world’s most beloved musicals for a reason – its catchy tunes, energetic choreography, and imaginative visuals offer something for everyone.
If you’re looking for a fun and family-friendly theatrical experience, Cats is the cat’s meow. Whether you’re a longtime fan or brand new to the Jellicle Ball, I think everyone should watch Cats at least once.
