Oh, the places you’ll go… Council commits to library evolution

Opening-up libraries 24/7, striving for innovation and delivering engaging events, programs and partnerships are just some of the key priorities for Northern Beaches Council libraries over the next five years.

Council endorsed the Library Strategic Plan 2023-28, which sets out key priorities and actions for the community-focused library service.

Northern Beaches Mayor Sue Heins said Council would continue to transform library services to meet the demands of a fast-changing world.

“Our libraries are loved and treasured by so many on the Northern Beaches, from parents and bubs at Baby Bounce, to students studying for the HSC, to adults and seniors dropping in for technology help and author talks,” Mayor Heins said.

“Our libraries offer so much more than collections, they are interactive hubs that provide safe, inclusive spaces for learning, relaxation and community connection.

“We continue to innovate and pioneer library services, becoming the first in the state to offer a dedicated Creative Library at Manly and one of the first public libraries in Australia to be open around the clock at Forestville 24/7 Library.”

There are 36 key actions to be implemented over the next five years, including:

  • offering 24/7 access to libraries where feasible
  • increasing the delivery of engaging programs, events and exhibitions
  • strengthening and diversifying collections
  • reducing fees
  • exploring new ways to document, capture and exhibit local stories
  • expanding access to history and heritage collections
  • long-term planning for home library services to meet future needs.

“We thank everyone who had their say on the draft strategy and for sharing your wonderful ideas. Together we will continue to adapt and evolve our library services for everyone to enjoy,” Mayor Heins said.

Northern Beaches Council operates one of the largest public library services in NSW. The library network has six physical branches across the Northern Beaches – Manly, Warringah Mall (Brookvale), Dee Why, Forestville, Glen Street (Belrose) and Mona Vale.

In 2022-23 more than 66,000 members of the community actively used the library service, with more than 870,000 visits, 1.3 million loans of physical and digital collection items and 31,657 attendances to learning, cultural and social engagement programs and events.
