Keep Your Child’s Smile Bright with the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS)

by Dr. Jodie Olivier, Vice President, Australian Dental Association NSW Branch | September 2024

You’ve heard the saying, “Prevention is better than cure.” This time-tested wisdom is especially relevant when it comes to oral health. Tooth decay, although preventable, is alarmingly common. Did you know that over 40% of children aged 5 to 10 have experienced tooth decay in their baby teeth? And that 1 in 4 children aged 6 to 14 have faced tooth decay in their adult teeth? Left untreated, tooth decay can lead to pain, infection, and difficulties in eating, speaking, or even smiling.

In today’s financial climate, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the demands on your budget—groceries, bills, school fees, and more. Dental visits might unintentionally slip down the priority list. However, there’s good news: the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) can help ease the burden of dental care costs for your children.

About the CDBS

The CDBS is a Medicare-funded program that provides up to $1,095 worth of dental treatment over two calendar years for eligible children. This benefit can be used at private dental practices, offering you the flexibility to choose the best care for your child.

The CDBS covers a wide range of basic dental treatments, including check-ups, x-rays, teeth cleaning, fissure sealants, fillings, and tooth extractions. While many dental practitioners support the CDBS, it’s always wise to confirm whether your dentist accepts it and whether they bulk bill or require a co-payment.

The Importance of Regular Dental Visits

The Australian Dental Association recommends that a child’s first dental visit should take place when their first tooth appears or by their first birthday, with regular check-ups at least once a year thereafter. These routine visits are crucial for monitoring your child’s dental and oral development.

Timing is everything when it comes to oral health. Tooth decay is the most common dental issue in children and often isn’t visible until it’s well advanced. Regular check-ups can catch problems early, sometimes even preventing surface decay from progressing further. Your dentist will assess various aspects such as tooth decay, gum health, and the development of teeth and jaws. And remember—baby teeth are just as important as adult teeth!

How to Check CDBS Eligibility

To be eligible for the CDBS:

  • Your child must be eligible for Medicare.
  • Your child must be between 0 and 17 years old for at least one day of the calendar year.
  • Either you or your child must receive an eligible Centrelink payment at least once during that calendar year.

You can verify eligibility at your local dental practice, through myGov with a linked Medicare account, or by calling the Medicare hotline at 132 011.

Your child deserves the best start in life. Let’s keep those smiles bright and healthy—check your eligibility for the CDBS today and schedule that all-important dental visit.
