How You Can Invest In Your Relationship Health

by: Carolyn Devries – CEO New Way Lawyers

Relationships can easily become comfortable and often we forget that we need to invest our attention and time into ensuring that they continue to grow and flourish. I see a lot of people who have unfortunately hit the point of no return and whilst every situation and relationship is different there are those who often simply did not invest enough time into their relationship. Here are 4 tips on how you can invest in your relationship:

Prioritise 1:1 time

Even though our days are short and we may not even have time for ourselves, it is crucial to prioritise time with your partner to foster your bond. Even a 10 minute nightly check in, or a shared activity such as cooking or even folding clothes provides an opportunity to connect with your partner and see how their day was.

Appreciation goes a long way

Whilst it can be easy to overlook the other person’s efforts and contributions, appreciation and gratitude is an important way to invest in a relationship. Expressing gratitude even for small things enhances your emotional connection and makes your partner feel seen and appreciated.

Active listening

Healthy relationships thrive on open and clear communication, which requires actively listening to one another. When your partner wants to communicate, make sure they have your full attention (ie. not being on your phone), that you are making eye contact and acknowledging what they are saying. When the communication is focused, less arguments tend to be a result.

Maintaining healthy boundaries

Healthy partnerships ultimately thrive from two healthy individuals. Ensuring you are filling up not only your partners cup but your own will allow you to nurture your personal interests and allow yourself to become a more present partner. If you feel like you don’t have the time to do so, then speak with your partner about finding and allocating some time to this.
