How to Choose the Right Skincare Based on Your Skin Concern

by Amy Zapantis – Amatus

Choosing the right skincare products can be overwhelming, especially with the numerous options available in the market. However, by understanding your skin concerns and identifying the right products that address those concerns, you can achieve and maintain healthy and glowing skin.

Identify your skin type

Usually, the first step in ensuring you are treating your skin correctly is to appropriately assess your skin and identify what type it is (dry, oily, combination). Understanding your skin type will ultimately allow you to understand what type of treatment and products you should be looking at.

Understanding ingredients

Ingredients are of course the most important (and most confusing to some) part of your skincare routine. look at the ingredient lists of brands you are researching to ensure they include key actives and ingredients to address your concern. If you have multiple skin concerns, you want to look at ingredients that are multiple purpose and can treat more than one of your concerns. This can avoid using too many products and too many ingredients. You want to maximise the benefits from ingredients and ensure they can penetrate without getting lost and overdiluted with others. Don’t overcomplicate it! Some examples (all found in Amatus Skin):

  • For acne-prone skin: look for products containing salicylic acid, azelaic acid or safe leaf oil.
  • For dry or dehydrated skin: look for products containing hyaluronic acid, glycerin or niacinamide.
  • For fine lines and wrinkles: look for products containing, ceramides, peptides, or vitamin C.

When choosing, ensuring you take note of your skin type, for example if you have dry skin, however struggling with breakouts, you can look for products using key acids as well as including rich hydrating key ingredients or pairing with a product to help hydrate. If you look at textures, looking to use something more lightweight if you have oily skin.

Consistency and patience

If you allow 2-4 weeks for you skin to adjust, you may be able to see results sooner, however, allow time and continuous routine for you skin to respond. Look for a routine that is realistic to you that you can use every day without stripping your skin and using harsh ingredients, this will ensure you can maintain clear and healthy skin.
