Forestville Library now open 24/7 permanently following trial

Northern Beaches will be one of the first Councils in Australia to open its library doors anytime of the day or night following a successful trial.

The initiative has been designed to meet the changing needs of the community.

Northern Beaches Mayor Michael Regan said this branch has been transformed into a modern, flexible library that is available to members whenever they need it.

“We have learnt a lot about ourselves and how we navigate work and study since the pandemic. We’ve had feedback from the community wanting access to the library after hours and we’ve listened.

“Libraries are changing – they’re not just books – they’re safe, welcoming public spaces with access to modern digital services. This service is another step towards our libraries becoming accessible community hubs, reflecting our community’s changing lifestyle.

“The overwhelming use during the three-month trial in 2022 has meant this will be a permanent initiative at this branch.

“We are so thrilled to offer this as a permanent service. Not only has this seen increase visitation and usage of this branch by re-imagining the space, but it has met the growing needs of the 24hr economy,” Mayor Regan said.

The innovative concept has been two years in the making with extensive research and development to create a safe space that meets the varying needs of visitors and is welcoming and accessible.

This location will also service the new hospital precinct and the rapid increase in urban dwellings in the new town centre.

Access to Forestville Library 24/7 is available to library members aged 16 and over. To sign up people can register for a site and safety induction through the website.

Once updated a member can enter by scanning their library card at the door and entering their library PIN to gain access.
