by a Mum of an 5-year-old
This delightful children’s biography introduces young readers to the life of Steve Irwin, Australia’s beloved wildlife expert, conservationist, and television personality known around the world as The Crocodile Hunter. The book follows Steve from his childhood surrounded by animals to his mission of teaching people to love and protect wildlife. With colourful illustrations and simple storytelling, it celebrates curiosity, courage, and caring for nature.
From a Mum’s Perspective
As someone who has always been a huge fan of Steve Irwin, reading this book with my daughter felt really special. I grew up watching him on TV and admiring the way he spoke about animals with so much excitement and respect. Being able to share his story with my five-year-old felt like introducing her to one of Australia’s most inspiring role models.
The book does a wonderful job of capturing Steve’s passion for wildlife in a way that young children can understand. It focuses on his love for animals, his adventurous spirit, and his mission to protect nature, all while keeping the story light and engaging. The illustrations are bright and full of animals, which kept my daughter completely interested from start to finish.

What I loved most was how it naturally sparked conversations about wildlife and caring for animals. Seeing my daughter get excited about the animals in the book reminded me of the same sense of wonder Steve always shared with the world. For families who love animals or who grew up watching Steve—this is such a lovely way to introduce his story to the next generation.
What My 5-Year-Old Thought
While we were reading, my daughter kept commenting on how brave Steve was for getting so close to crocodiles and snakes. The crocodile pages were definitely her favourite she said they looked a little scary but also really cool. She spent time pointing out all the different animals in the pictures and even tried counting them. By the end, she said she thought Steve must really love animals and wants everyone to help take care of them
