Book Review: Dog Stayed by Tammy Forster

by a Mum of an 8-year-old

Dog Stayed by Tammy Forster is a heartfelt children’s book about loyalty, love, and the special bond between people and their dogs. The story gently explores themes of patience, devotion, and friendship, making it both emotional and comforting for young readers.

The story is simple yet powerful, and Tammy Forster does a wonderful job of showing just how deep the connection between a dog and its family can be. The writing has a warmth to it that makes the story feel sincere and heartfelt, and the illustrations help bring those emotions to life in a way that children can easily understand.

For families who have pets, it feels especially meaningful, because it reflects the loyalty and unconditional love dogs give so freely. It also opened up some lovely conversation with my child about responsibility, friendship, and caring for animals. Books like this are wonderful because they create those quiet moments of connection during reading time. Dog Stayed is a beautiful story that dog-loving families will especially treasure.

As we were reading, my child kept commenting on how sweet the dog was and how patient he seemed. She said her favourite thing about the story was how loyal the dog was and how he stayed because he loved his family.

When we finished the book, she told me it made her think about how much dogs care about their people. She even started talking about what she thinks dogs might feel when they wait for their owners or follow them around the house. I always enjoy seeing stories that help kids think about emotions and relationships like that.
