My five-year-old has added a new line to her nightly book pile, and it’s already a favourite. Brave Like Bunji, written by Jake Gablonski and illustrated by Samantha Campbell, tells the story of a boy who feels out of step with his schoolmates and runs off to the riverbank, where a rainbow lorikeet named Wylla sweeps him into an adventure over the spectacular Nitmiluk Gorge.
What struck me most, reading it aloud, was how gently it handles big feelings. Bunji’s worry about not fitting in is something my own daughter recognises instantly, and watching him find his courage through the rhythm of the land and the company of a new friend gave us plenty to talk about afterwards, about being true to yourself and feeling brave even when you’re a little unsure.
Campbell’s illustrations are a real highlight. The double-page spreads of the gorge are bursting with colour and movement, and my daughter kept tracing her finger along the waterfalls and rock formations, asking questions about the place itself. There’s a real warmth and authenticity here too, with both creators drawing on their own backgrounds and connection to Country, which comes through in every page.
It’s a beautiful one for bedtime, slow and soothing, but with enough adventure to keep little ones engaged right to the end. We finished it and she asked to read it again straight away, which is always the best sign.
A gorgeous, heartfelt story about identity, belonging, and finding your own kind of brave. Highly recommend adding this one to your home library.
