A Christmas Carol

Ensemble Theatre is celebrating the festive season with an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic A CHRISTMAS CAROL from 25th November – 30th December.

Adapted for the stage by Hilary Bell, A CHRISTMAS CAROL will immerse audiences in the magic of Dickens’ ghostly world, as it conjures up Christmas spirits with music, pantomime, and other thrilling surprises.

Visited by three strangers on the eve before Christmas, Ebenezer Scrooge, played by Hilary’s father and theatre great John Bell, sees his inexcusable penny-pinching ways laid bare: from brushes with the past, to enlightenment in the present and dreaded visions of the future. Will Scrooge repent and throw turkey to the wind, or will he hold on to his purse strings, forever doomed like his poor deceased friend Marley?

The outstanding ensemble cast also includes Valerie Bader (Killing Katie), Jay James-Moody (Opera Australia’s West Side Story), Emily McKnight (Sport For Jove’s Romeo & Juliet) and Anthony Taufa (STC’s How to Rule the World).

“A CHRISTMAS CAROL is a timeless and enduring story which has been delighting theatre audiences for two centuries. This adaptation will see music hall sing-alongs collide with a bracing call-to-arms against mean-spiritedness. I’m truly excited to be bringing Hilary Bell’s masterful work to life alongside an inimitable cast,” said director Damien Ryan.

“A CHRISTMAS CAROL is about the miserly Scrooge, who is shown the error of his ways by three spirits and turns his life around. It was John, my dad’s idea. He approached me about doing a Dickens – a writer that we both really love and a story that we’ve loved for many years,” said playwright Hilary Bell.

It is very much about giving instead of taking, and it’s a real call-to-arms about contributing something while you’re here on earth, while you’re alive, while you can interact and do something. The Crummels family are all a bunch of show-offs but they’re going to have a great time and make sure the audience does too. It’s going to be playful, it’s going to be ghostly, and it’s ultimately going to be very life affirming.”

“I am thrilled to end this year on a festive note and present audiences with two marvellous productions for the whole family to enjoy. Hilary Bell’s magical adaptation of Charles Dicken’s A CHRSTMAS CAROL will see exceptional local talent shine brightly on stage,” said Mark Kilmurry, Artistic Director, Ensemble Theatre.
