5 reasons to try Equine Therapy to help with stress and anxiety

with Maxime Willems, founder of MW Therapy and Training

Equine Therapy, in simple terms, is a guided therapy practice using the interaction of horses and horse based activities. Studies have suggested that Equine Therapy can be effective for anger issues, depression, trauma and dissociation while also improving confidence and communication skills. We spoke to the owner of Maxime Willems, the founder of MW Therapy and Training and the Equine Wellness Expert at Sugar Beach Ranch on 5 reasons to try equine therapy (or equine wellness which is the new buzz word).

Emotional Health

There have been studies to suggest that horses provide a sense of calm and relaxation to humans due to their natural mannerisms and their constant present awareness. At the same time, being with flight and prey animals, can open up doors for exploring fears, anxiety or mistrust. Also, for people who may find it difficult to be open about their feelings and emotions, horses can provide a safe and non-judgemental environment to be able to facilitate a trusted, safe space to help people feel emotionally healthy.

Physical Health

While a lot of Equine Therapy is done on the ground, some riding may take place too. Sessions on horseback can offer many physical benefits, including coordination, balance, increased cardiovascular and reduced blood pressure. Following the movement and rhythm of a horse at a simple walk can also work therapeutic, as it supports us to stay in the present moment and connected to our own physical body.

Spiritual Health

Horses are animals of spirit. They are masters of awareness who constantly live in the present moment with contentment and without judgement. As a social herd animal, they are very sensitive to the emotions and intentions of those around them, both animals and humans. This heightened awareness and sensitivity can allow them to mirror emotions, and certain unhelpful habits,  which can support people with fostering emotional awareness and developing self-awareness.

Social Health

According to research, there have been suggested benefits of equine based therapy to assist adults who experience low self-esteem, loneliness, a sense that they don’t belong, and social anxiety. Mindful horse interactions have shown to provide opportunities for experiencing low stress social interactions which then can help humans with boosting their confidence, social interactions and creating more meaningful friendships and relationships in life.

Digital Detox:

Lastly, the tranquil and rhythmic nature of working with horses can be mentally refreshing, helping to clear the mind and provide a break from the information overload common in the digital world. Mindful interactions with horses, out in nature, can offer an environment of safety, care and connection to our own sense of self and the natural world around us. Also, working with horses requires clear, non-verbal communication which can improve interpersonal skills and strengthen connections with others, counteracting the isolating effects of excessive digital interaction.
