A Funny, Refreshing Look at Reinvention
Last night I had the pleasure of seeing The Roommate at Ensemble Theatre, and it was one of those productions that stays with you long after you’ve left the theatre.
At its heart, The Roommate is a story about two women at a crossroads in life. What begins as an unlikely living arrangement quickly develops into a witty, thought-provoking exploration of friendship, identity, and the courage it takes to reinvent yourself. As mums, wives, carers and women who often spend years putting others first, many audience members will find parts of this story deeply relatable.

The performances were exceptional. Both lead actors brought warmth, humour and vulnerability to their roles, creating characters that felt authentic and engaging. Their chemistry carried the entire production, delivering plenty of laugh-out-loud moments while also touching on deeper themes about ageing, change and self-discovery.
The intimate setting of Ensemble Theatre was the perfect backdrop for this character-driven story. Every expression, pause and emotional shift felt immediate, drawing the audience into the lives of these two women in a way that larger venues often can’t achieve.

What I appreciated most was that the play doesn’t suggest life slows down once the kids are grown or the routine becomes familiar. Instead, it reminds us that there is always room for growth, adventure and unexpected opportunities—sometimes when we least expect them.
Funny, clever and surprisingly moving, The Roommate is a wonderful night out for women looking for a theatre experience that entertains while also offering something meaningful to reflect on. Whether you’re planning a girls’ night, a date night or simply some time for yourself, this production is well worth seeing.
