Composting Workshop

Learn how to set up your compost and/or your worm farm to be an integral part of your waste management and your garden. Learn techniques and tips for troubleshooting to make the best compost and fertiliser that you possibly can.

Australian households waste 2.5 million tonnes of food each year, or more than 4kg per household per week. Organic material makes up about 50% of what is in the average household wheelie bin. Though the tide is changing -by the end of the decade, Australia has a national target to halve food waste.

Additionally, food waste going into landfill breaks down producing methane and carbon dioxide, both potent greenhouse gases. Fertilise your garden, reduce waste, and your ecological footprint at the same time.

Northern Beaches and a number of other Councils give away free or discounted compost bins and worm farms to residents. This workshop will assist you in setting them up and keeping them thriving.

This two-hour session is run by science teacher Angie Penn, who has set up and coordinated school community gardens. Manly Vale Community Garden is a great venue for learning about different compost methods.
