(Community Screening) Waterman: The Legendary Life Story of Duke Kahanamoku
In January 1915, Hawaiian waterman Duke Kahanamoku paddled into the surf at Freshwater Beach and made history. Riding a board of solid sugar pine, he lit a spark that set Australian surfing aflame and made Freshwater Beach the “Home of Australian Surfing.”
Join Friends of Freshwater and Hawaiian Airlines for a free community event to honor the Duke’s legacy before his birthday on 24 August.
Enjoy complimentary snacks and drinks, an ocean safety presentation from Oʻahu nonprofit Nā Kama Kai, a screening of the award-winning documentary ‘Waterman’ and a Q&A with Duane DeSoto, founder and CEO of Nā Kama Kai and the celebrated waterman who played the Duke in the film.
