5 Important Things a Couple Needs to Know Before Getting Married

By the time you plan to get married, it is assumed that you know everything about your partner and vice versa. However, there are still many things that couples need to talk about before they walk down the aisle. When you consider these questions, you will uncover various expectations, dreams, and needs for your life together that you have never considered.

Sure, while your preferences and goals may shift over time, there is still some stuff that you and your soon-to-be spouse need to sort out, to avoid any potential misunderstandings and conflicts. So let’s see what these are!

Before You Plan To Get Married, What Are Some Important Things Couples Should Know?

Some important things that couples need to know before getting married are:

1. The Honeymoon Phase Will Last For Roughly A Year

As it is commonly said, the ‘puppy love’ stage of your marriage will not stay forever. Based on studies, it has been found that this period will not last for too long. After your first year together, your body raises the chemicals that boost the plasma nerve growth factor, often associated with intense romantic feelings like focusing on your partner very often, not focusing on yourself, and increased heart rate.

However, these feelings start decreasing after a year. While there are no clear reasons why these feelings start fading after a year, it is actually for good reasons for wanting to get. It will be very stressful for your body if you focus on one person the entire time. This may feel like the level of love that you have had for one another has decreased. However, this is not the case.

2. Recognition Will Dawn That You And Your Partner Are Not The Same

When you are in a relationship or just got married, it may seem that you and your partner are the same people and feel inseparable; in fact, you may even think about when to get married after dating, rushing into a relationship. However, it is only when you start living together will you notice some differences. You will have different routines and tolerances, there will be differences in opinions, habits, ideas, feelings, priorities, etc. For instance, you both will have a different idea of what constitutes a clean house; and this can cause more conflicts e.t.c.

But once you start getting a hint that you are not the same people, you will have to understand that you and your partner will have to work together to love your differences and appreciate them.

3. Appreciation Is Key To You And Your Partner Staying Together

For any relationship to feel lively and respectful, appreciation is the key. It is recommended that you keep a private diary and start writing down things about your partner that you are grateful for. Even if you cannot do it daily, try to do it once a week. Because it has been proven that once you start writing down things you are thankful for, your relationship will become stronger.

4. Couples Stay Happy Because They Are In Love

While this may go without saying, you must consider what are reasons to get married. Because as cliche as it might sound, love is everything in a relationship. Based on studies, it has been found that people who are in love and get married are much happier. Moreover, studies have found that couples that are happy and in love:

  • Hold hands more than other couples
  • Have regular date nights
  • Have a decent circle of friends
  • Work out together in the gym
  • Live in an urban area
  • Are more than likely to have fun outdoors together
  • Have a better level of education and higher household income

5. Talk About Social Media Habits Before Marrying

In today’s time, almost every one of us is on social media. Therefore, it should not surprise that the number of riffs and arguments between couples can occur over that very use of social media. Mostly because they feel like you might spend too much time there, and that causes a strain on your relationship. So if they do complain at some point, try to peacefully talk with them about it, explain why you’re doing it. And if possible, try to spend more time with your partner than on social media, and especially don’t use it on date nights or one-on-one conversations. After all, put yourself in their shoes – would you be happy talking to someone if they were constantly checking their Instagram feed instead of listening to you?

Additionally, it is also vital that conversing or following your ex on social media can make your wife/husband uncomfortable. Social media can be quite detrimental for any relationship; even if you cannot do so, ensure that you use it respectfully.

Final Thoughts

The perfect age to get married is not when you hit a certain number or are under the influence of that intoxicating crush. Marriage is a serious decision, and many don’t think it through and may want to get married but can’t afford it. So think it through why you need to get married and keep in mind these little tips; get some research done.  It is encouraged that you have these conversations well beforehand because it will be tough to walk away once the wedding planning process has begun. Best of luck!
