Review: The Phantom of the Opera

Northern Beaches Mums Jill got the opportunity to see The Phantom of the Opera at Sydney’s Opera House and here is her raving review…

It’s just spectacular!

Phantom debuted in London in 1986. Having seen the Original in London in the late 80s as a teenager I could not wait to see the updated version at the Sydney Opera House. Phantom is just the musical of all musicals and a show that everyone should see at least once in their lifetime. To be totally beside myself with excitement I managed to get two tickets to the opening night too.

The show is an updated version of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s production, so expect to see some changes. All I will say is that it is grittier.

I’m sure everyone has a really good idea of what Phantom is about, but for the benefit of those that don’t, ‘the Phantom haunts the catacombs beneath the Paris Opera House. He’s a man and mystery, a deformed genius. And in Christine Daaé, he’s found his angel of music: the young woman he would make a star. But how many lives does he sacrifice to make the music of the night?’

This Sydney show was the first time the new version of Phantom has been performed and with a full 27-piece orchestra.

And the orchestra pit is one of the main reasons the show is so enduring. The music totally moves you, it’s emotional, it’s dramatic and just carries you through the story.

The cast were amazing, just born to play their roles. Josh Piterman plays the Phantom and totally holds the centre stage with his amazing performance. Amy Manford is Australian-American soprano and plays Christine and wow can she hit those notes.

I promise you will be grinning with delight from ear to ear during the performance. This is a must see for everyone. Even if you are not usually a theatre fan seeing the famous Phantom is a must, and what better place than the Opera House.

The Phantom of the Opera runs at the Sydney Opera House until 16th of October, 2022. Get tickets here.
