Review: A Christmas Carol

Northern Beaches Mum Laura got the opportunity to see A Christmas Carol at The Ensemble Theatre and sent us this review…

The Ensemble Theatre has become our favourite theatre this year. Everything that we’ve seen at this beautiful little theatre has been fabulous. You know you are in for a a quality show when the audience is full of actors from others shows around the city.

A Christmas Carol, a much loved story by Charles Dickens and adapted for the stage by Hilary Bell, is bought to life by a superb cast. Ebenezer Scrooge, portrayed convincingly by John Bell, is a miser – cold, stingy and living as a recluse. The Crummles family home sets the scene and livens up the stage and transforms this story through entertaining pantomime, music, laughter and amazing surprises. A very clever presentation of this wonderful classic tale, definitely one to be seen in this festive season.

Ghosts are not what you would associate with Christmas but they seem to want to conjure into Scrooge’s world and he is visited by three very different ones – the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come – in the hopes he will have an awakening to open his eyes and soften his judgments – but will he just say ‘”Bah! Humbug!” to it all and squeeze the purse even tighter closed and remain doomed forever more.

John Bell is joined by his talented and entertaining cast members Jay James-Moody, Genevieve Lemon, Emily McKnight and Anthony Taufa. They transform into their characters to enthral and captivate the audience. The lively performances in this production make for a show to delight all.

The running time is approximately 80 minutes and what a wonderful 80 minutes it was! There is no interval but I was captured by the show that I didn’t need a break. This performance is recommended for ages 8 and over, so it is one for the whole family!
