Typically, as the middle of the year approaches we are overwhelmed with cold weather, darker days and can often feel a burn out approaching. If you feel a sense of unbalance around this time of the year, you are not alone! We spoke to three wellness experts who gave us some tips on how they help restore their mind and body when they feel off balance.
Kate Kendall – Lead Yogi
Slow down the breath:
When we slow down the breath, we also slow down the beat of the heart which slows down the brain waves meaning we become more present. And when we’re more present we can practice that spiritual ‘muscle’ we all have for pausing.
Power in the Pause:
Pausing more often when we’re in a highly stressful situation or overwhelm grants us the ability to separate ourselves from it, know that it’s universal and in this way, less personal. We’re better able to let go, from this place, of the physical tension that occurs in the body from a result of over control. Other ways to practice the pause are to literally make space each day to lie down and do nothing. No scrolling and no planning. A practice like Yoga Nidra is perfect.
Chasca Summerville – Ayurvedic Practitioner
Eat mindfully:
Prioritise sitting down to eat your meal. Be present, chew thoroughly, give gratitude and allow your body to experience the full spectrum of flavours. This sacred moment in your day not only supports better digestion but is a good opportunity to show up for yourself and carve out 15 minutes for your own nourishment.
Invest in self-care:
Self-care comes in many forms and is essential for health and well-being. As the saying goes “you can’t give from an empty cup”. Self-care is not selfish, it is essential for your ability to nurture yourself, and your loved ones. Self-care can look like bubble baths, self-massage, meditation etc, but can also come in non-linear forms such as setting healthy boundaries, having time-out, and asking for help.
Siobhan Fildes – Ashaya Wellness
Spend time in nature:
Whenever I’m feeling out of balance physically or emotionally, I’m always drawn to nature. My favourite thing to do is walk barefoot on grass, feeling the earth under my feet. It’s immediately grounding and helps to rebalance and de-stress.
Daily movement:
Taking time out each day to move your body is so important for physical and mental health. A gentle yoga practice, a walk in the park or a strength or cardio class. I try and mix up my exercise sessions and move intuitively based on my mood, energy levels and phase of my cycle. My non-negotiable is a sequence of gentle yoga poses each morning to awaken the body and set me up for the day ahead.
