Hannah Waterman on Playing a Wife (On and Off Stage) in Colder Than Here

September 2024

We spoke to Hannah Waterman, starring in “Colder Than Here” at Ensemble Theatre from 16th September.

Tell us about your character

Myra is an intelligent, funny woman who has terminal bone cancer and is planning her own funeral with her family.

What do you find most challenging about bringing your character to life on stage?

There are many challenges within the play not least the central theme of death. The trick seems to be to not play the sentiment but more the urgency and direction as Myra tries to help her family come to terms with her imminent death.

What’s it like playing husband and wife characters with your husband?

Huw and I have worked together many times and to be honest it’s a gift. He’s such a wonderful actor and so giving to other actors. We have a shorthand that makes the lived in intimacy easy and he makes me feel incredibly safe on stage.

Why should people see this show?

If you want to see a truthful funny play that hits big themes head on then this is the piece for you. It’s simply beautiful and our director Janine Watson is a super talent!!

How do you like to spend your time when you’re not rehearsing or performing?

Generally speaking for both Huw and I, family time is the key. We both spend a lot of time away from home with work. The simple joys are hanging out with our son and watching him play sports and an early Sunday Dinner at our local with maybe a game of UNO!

Colder Than Here is on at Ensemble Theatre from 16th September to 12th October – tickets available here.
