There are times when it is appropriate to sit down with our children and have a deep conversation about how they are feeling, what problems they are facing in their lives and help them work out the best strategies to move forward. It can give them a chance to slow down, speak their truth and get clear with their thoughts and feelings.
Other times when they are exhausted, hungry, overheated, highly emotional, overwhelmed and at breaking point, talking can add to that feeling of sensory overload. When we are highly stressed it can be hard to think & act calmly and rationally.
I have found with my own kids, one of the most helpful actions to prevent meltdowns or tantrums, is to call on the calming and healing benefits of water.
“The highest vibration always wins.” – Reverend Michael Bernard Beckwith
I incorporate the healing properties of water to help me destress and regulate too, so I can hold space for my children when they are struggling. Instead of being pulled into their storm, they take refuge in my calm.
We are water beings. We were formed in the waters of our mother’s womb and our body is made up primarily of water.
Here are ten ways I have found water can help us calm and regulate:
- Showers.
One of the quickest ways to clear your energy field is by having a shower. There are not many distractions in showers, it’s one of the only places left where people generally don’t take their phone or electronic devices. The soothing, rhythmic sound of the water helps hush outside noise & distractions assisting the body to realign to a state of inner equilibrium.
“Shower Thoughts” is a term to describe the clear guidance you receive from your Highest Self or Guides while you are having a shower. Showers can purify and calm you down enough to be able to start seeing the bigger picture, think clearly about issues you are facing in life, and download new information and ideas. - Baths.
Baths are a fantastic way to regulate your emotional state because you are submerged in the healing properties of water. To create an even better healing experience I recommend the use of Magnesium Bath Salts. Salt water is a wonderful energy cleanser and magnesium is a much-needed nutrient to help nourish a healthy nervous system. - Ocean.
Swimming in the ocean is a powerhouse cleanser and healer. Another bonus of visiting the ocean is the act of walking on the beach with your shoes off. Connecting to the Earth through the soles of your feet can allow unhealthy energy to drain out of the body which is then transmuted and repurposed by the Earth, like compost!
At the same time our body also uploads healthy energy from the Earth, which helps us calm, regulate and ground. We can then take that healthy energy with us when we leave.
Spending time in nature recharges our batteries. - Sprinkler.
In the warmer months kids can take great delight running around the backyard, cooling off with the water coming out of the sprinkler. Walking, running, and dancing are great ways of discharging old stagnant energy and getting a boost of feel-good endorphins. - Food and water.
Sometimes the feeling of hunger is caused by a lack of hydration and other times it is genuine hunger. Some people forget to drink water, so I like to make sure my kids eat their water too. Icy poles, smoothies, soups, coconut water, watermelon, cucumber, oranges, celery, strawberries, and rockmelon are wonderful hydrating foods. - Diffusing essential oils.
Adding a few drops of essential oils to a diffuser is a quick & enjoyable way to help create a calm environment while cleaning and humidifying the air. During the daytime I like to use fresh clean natural scents like Lemongrass, Orange, and Clary Sage. At nighttime I use an essential oil blend that was created specifically for sleep, containing calming scents like Lavender. My children’s diffuser can also play music and white noise which helps them drift off to sleep. - Waterfalls and Rain.
Like the ocean, waterfalls and rain showers can help reconnect you to nature and allow her to heal you through her element of water. Rain and waterfalls clear old stagnant energy out of your system and replace it with grounded healthy energy.
I see spending time in nature as preventative medicine. It fills up our cups and acts like a buffer which helps us handle life’s challenges better. - Bubbles.
Blowing bubbles is a fun way to release stress and tension. The act of blowing bubbles encourages deep and slow breathing which helps kids regulate and calm down. - Sound healing.
Listening to sounds of the ocean, rainfall, waterfalls, and gentle babbling brooks can help us feel safe, calm, and relaxed. You can find many beautiful sound healing videos featuring water on YouTube. - Blessing.
Water is life. It is sacred, conscious, flowing all around us and inside us. You don’t have to be a spiritual healer to bless water. Saying a simple “thank you” to and for water is enough. Gratitude is one of the quickest ways to raise your vibration and feel good.
The “Inner Child” is another name we use to describe the Subconscious Mind. All of us, no matter what age, have an Inner Child that needs love, attention, and nurturing. I designed this list with children in mind, but the medicine of water can help people of all ages.
