Description

FREE COMMUNITY EVENT, LUNCH PROVIDED!

It is so often said that ‘Knowledge is Power’ and ‘You don’t know what you don’t know’.

So… what if, together, we can do something about that?

Thanks to an NSW Government Grant from the Department of Communities and Justice and the Disability Advocacy Futures Program, Action for People With Disability is proud and excited to present a series of 8 community education and advocacy workshops for the disability community in Northern Sydney.

They would love you to join their team and the panel of expert presenters they have brought together, so that you can learn specialised information to support you to know and uphold your rights, and to be your own self-advocate.

Knowledge truly can bring power.

So let’s learn together.

WORKSHOP 2: Thursday 16th May 2024

Informed & Empowered: Disability and The Justice System

Guided by two subject matter experts, let’s explore some of the complexities of Navigating the Justice System:

  • The right to legal representation
  • Different legal settings, such as local courts, the Administrative Appeals Tribunal for NDIS and Centrelink matters, and the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal for guardianship, tenancy, consume, and discrimination matters.
  • What are some ‘common’ laws and legislation that are relevant when supporting people with disability in their interactions with the Police and law?
  • What support is available in interviews with Police and in other legal settings?
  • What are some options in legal and Police interviews when someone requires communication support?
  • What is an Apprehended Violence Order / AVO?

This session will include multiple sessions of focused information, separated by catered breaks.
