Local Music School Empowers people with disability through a Sydney-First Inclusive Musical using ‘buddy-model’—Despite NDIS Challenges & Personal Hardships
Against the odds, Ingrid has pushed through severe anxiety triggered by NDIS legislation changes, raising funds to put on the show and a heartbreaking time for her Jewish community to ensure her cast takes the stage at the Zenith Theatre in Chatswood this March (tickets on sale now).
For the first time in Sydney, Umbrella School of Music is producing a fully inclusive version of Disney’s Camp Rock: The One Act Edition, where every character is performed by two or more actors—one without disability paired with another actor (or two) with disability —showcasing an innovative ‘buddy model’ that fosters deep friendships, teamwork, and a shared passion for the arts.

- First-of-its-kind in Sydney – Inclusive casting groups of actors aged from 9 to 59 with and without disabilities sharing lines, parts and solos.
- Buddy model success – Lifelong friendships are forming amongst the cast, and even a few “showmances” are blooming.
- Showcasing ability: This production is all about showcasing what people of all abilities can do & how much they have to offer the performing arts.
- A passionate cast – From first-time performers to experienced actors with Down Syndrome, every cast member brings heart and dedication to ensure all shine on stage.
- Overcoming adversity – Navigating anxiety, NDIS funding changes, and the challenges of producing live theatre with a diverse cast.
Overcoming Challenges: NDIS, Anxiety & Rising Marginalisation
In October, Ingrid feared that NDIS legislation changes to music activities could threaten the ability of some cast members to use their NDIS funding to participate in the project. Stage producer Ingrid found herself reliving severe anxiety, navigating policy shifts while ensuring rehearsals continued. Determined not to let financial barriers exclude anyone, she was prepared to ask her parents for an early inheritance to support her cast if necessary.
As conversations around inclusivity in the arts gain momentum, this musical demonstrates how accessible theatre can and should be. In the current climate of rising division and marginalisation, this show is a celebration of diversity, accessibility, acceptance, and the power of community.
