Stepping into a New World: My Settlement Journey
Migrants and refugees residing on the Northern Beaches share stories about their settlement journeys, as part of a joint project between NSW TAFE, Community Northern Beaches and Spill the Beans Writing Community. First-hand personal accounts from people who have experienced loneliness, prejudice, unemployment, and housing challenges were collected and are being shared as a source of comfort and guidance to other new arrivals. The stories also provide practical information which illustrates the support and understanding they have gained from the local community. You will be invited to share your stories and to interact with several of the storytellers and writers who will join us for this special event.
This event is part of Settled/Unsettled, a multidisciplinary exhibition project that explores issues around refugees, asylum seekers, and the theme of cultural displacement.
Through paintings, film, ceramics and installation, Mehwish Iqbal, Kathrin Longhurst, Angus McDonald and Penny Byrne convey their concerns about social justice issues that matter so much in Australia today. Works by artists Hedar Abadi, Mehrdad MehrAeen and Raneen Shamon explore personal refugee experiences and unique interpretations of life as new Australian artists.
Presented in partnership with Settlement Services International; an organisation that facilitates diverse cultural participation and individual artistic expression by nurturing cultural practitioners from refugee and migrant backgrounds. Supported by Community Northern Beaches and The Social Outfit. This exhibition is part of Refugee Week 2022.
