Sea Edibles Foraging Workshop Turimetta Beach

Ever walked along the coastline and wondered about all of those plants, seaweed and seafood? Are they edible? How do you harvest them? How do you positively identify them? Are you allowed to collect them?

Join expert forager Diego Bonetto on a 2.5 hour workshop learning the what, where and how of collecting a meal from the seashore.

Participants in this workshop will embark on a guided walk along Turimetta Beach, delving into the knowledge of coastal wild foods, seaside plants, and edible seaweeds. The exploration will offer insights from both indigenous and cosmopolitan perspectives, covering aspects such as legal restrictions, ecological considerations, the fragility of ecosystems, and the principles of stewardship and land and sea care.

The workshop is meticulously designed to provide attendees with identification skills, and each participant will receive relevant materials on the day, including follow-up links for further research. It is recommended to dress appropriately for the weather and to bring a camera and notebook for those interested in documenting the information shared.

The timing of the workshop is aligned with low tide, but access to the rock platform is contingent upon wave conditions and may be slippery. As part of the workshop, participants will be furnished with a booklet detailing the most common edibles of the Sydney Basin and comprehensive notes on edible seaweeds. Additional follow-up information about the discussed plants will also be provided after the workshop.

It’s important to note that the workshop may not be suitable for individuals with limited mobility, as it involves a descent down a steep escarpment to reach the beach.
