Cove Cleanup: Underwater Blitz
Join for a monthly Cove Cleanup and get involved in an underwater blitz!
What’s involved in the underwater blitz?
This month you have the option to strawkle (snorkel) with Operation Straw, or freedive or scuba dive* with Immersia Freediving and the SeaBees.
*Please note gear for scuba diving is not included, however, Dive Centre Manly is offering 10% off for those who rent through them.
**All freedivers and divers must be certified and bring their certificates to the event as they will be checked.
What if I don’t want to get in the water?
Never fear, Eco Adventure Crew and AUSMAP will be on the beach doing their thing! EAC will be hosting a beach clean to collect all the macro pieces of rubbish while AUSMAP will be getting more microplastic samples.
Additionally, Pittwater Eco Adventures will be onsite hosting a small-scale recycling workshop. Please feel free to bring down your type 2 and 5 plastic lids to be recycled.
What do you need for the event?
All equipment will be provided for the beach clean and microplastics survey, however, it is recommended you dress for the weather, with closed-in shoes just in case there are sharp items, and perhaps bring a small towel too just in case you get wet.
If you’re a hot beverage drinker they’d also love for you to bring your keep cup to save waste entering back into the environment.
For the underwater blitz:
– You must bring your own snorkel, mask, and fins. Wetsuits are optional but recommended due to the temperature of the water.
– You must be a competent swimmer and confident in the water, and already know how to snorkel, freedive and scuba dive* as we do not provide training.
– For divers who don’t have their own gear, contact Dive Centre Manly to rent some (10% off)
*Divers must also bring their diver certs.
What time should I arrive?
To ensure smooth timing of events, please aim to meet on the grass patch outside the Manly Art Gallery and Museum before 9am. From then the event will get underway with the following timing.
9am: Welcome, event briefing, waiver signing, and gear up.
9:30-10:15am: Cleanup & microplastics survey
