Business in the Spotlight: The Northern Beaches Youth Theatre

The Northern Beaches Youth Theatre was reborn due to community need and the passion of a group of Northern Beaches mums who knew the healing power of the creative arts and what skills and community theatre-making can bring to our youth. The re-established NBYT is a not-for-profit charity with a main goal to be a safe, inclusive space for our youth to find a haven and immerse themselves in different areas of live theatre.

Now headed by co-directors Victoria Lockhart of Smarty Pants Drama and Tutoring and Chantal Harrison of Kids Acting Out, NBYT have chosen an important play by NIDA-trained Australian playwright, Jessica Bellamy for their mid-year production.

“Life is hard enough for a ‘worrier’ living on an isthmus in the middle of a climate emergency, Bea can see every possible scenario that could go wrong.
It doesn’t help that the parents either don’t get it or are just as anxious themselves.
What happens when your worries come to life?
Who is more dangerous… the sharks or the humans?”

Get along to see the Northern Beaches Youth Theatre’s June Production of Jessica Bellamy’s School of Sharks. This play is a family-friendly, clever, humorous but deep look at the struggles young people endure. It invites many discussions about environment, anxiety, privilege and emotional wellbeing.
