An Interview with Carita Spencer

• What is The Heartbreak Choir about?

Well, believe it or not, it’s a play about a choir! Set in a small country town in Victoria, the entire action taking place in one location – the old Country Fire Association Hall. The locals who are part of the choir are a colourful bunch and come together regularly to sing, so it is a play where the music is part of the action. However, there’s been a tragedy in the town which is now testing the relationships within the choir members. Ultimately, it’s a beautiful, funny, powerful play about the importance of community and the power of music. 

• Tell us about your character

My character, Mack, is quite a character! She reminds me of lots of loud, funny women that I met growing up (in real life) in Rockhampton, Central Qld. She uses humour to deal with pretty much everything. She runs a herb farm with her husband and is a mother of three. She’s at a real crossroads in her life right now as her youngest, Savannah, is about to leave home for the big smoke. So the reality of being an empty-nester is setting in. 

• Who should come see this show?

I know this sounds like a cliche, but it’s a show with a really broad appeal. It deals with adult themes so it’s not one for young kids but any adult will appreciate this very human, uplifting story.

• What do you do when you’re not acting?

I’m a visual artist as well, so when I’m not working as a performing artist, you’ll find me in my Melbourne studio, painting. Feel free to check out my social pages.
